Early Vote Totals Near 1800

 

            Huntsville, TN (2008-10-24) Friday was the busiest day thus far in the state’s 14-day Early Voting period in Scott County, as 343 persons cast ballots.  Early Voting for the November 4, 2008 General and Municipal Election ends on October 30, 2008.

            According to Administrator of Elections Gabe Lowe, 343 persons cast ballots in person on Friday, the largest turnout to date during Early Voting.  In addition to the votes cast by personal appearance, another eight ballots were received by mail, making the total for the day 351.  The last two Fridays have been the busiest for polls workers, as 273 persons cast ballots on October 17, 2008.  The polls were open extended hours both days, a contributing factor to the greater turnout.

            So far, 1645 persons have cast their preferences at one of the county’s two Early Voting precincts.  With 121 ballots returned by mail and another 31 cast by area nursing home residents, the total votes cast thus far is 1,797.

            As of Thursday, 806,607 ballots had been cast in Tennessee.

A closer look at the municipal elections indicate that 160 people have voted in the Town of Huntsville election and 83 have marked their ballots in the Town of Winfield election.  In Huntsville, citizens are selecting a mayor and four aldermen.  Two alderman seats are up for election in Winfield.

On the General Election ballot, voters will be voting for President of the United States, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives (4th Congressional District), State Senate (12th District) and State House of Representatives (38th District).

Early Voting will continue through Thursday, October 30, 2008. Eligible registered voters may cast their ballot Monday through Thursday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  Friday Early Voting hours, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Polls will be open Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Persons may cast their ballot at either of Scott County’s Early Voting precincts, regardless of where they live in the county.  The Early Voting polling sites are located at the Scott County Election Commission Office, 2845 Baker Highway in Huntsville and the Oneida Municipal Building, 121 Municipal Drive in Oneida.

Voters must show identification when they appear to vote, both during the Early Voting period and on Election Day.
