Jacksboro, TN (2008-11-01) The Oneida Middle School Indians claimed their first East Tennessee football title Saturday afternoon, defeating the Cherokee Yellow Jackets 24-0. Six Indians, as well as 16 County players, were named to their respective All-District teams.
In a dominating overall performance, the Oneida Indians came out on top of the Cherokee Yellow Jackets 24-0, claiming their first Gold Ball in 4 tries. After a scoreless first quarter, Oneida took the lead on a 17-yard pass from Houston West to Noah Duncan. After Dannon West’s 2-point conversion, Oneida went up 8-0. After a Cherokee turnover, marched down the field late in the first half, extending the lead to 16-0 on a Houston West 13-yard run, adding another 2-point conversion with 34.1 seconds remaining. Cherokee threatened to score on their opening drive of the second half, but Cole West ended the threat with one of his 3 interceptions on the game in the Indian endzone. Oneida effectively ended the game on the ensuing possession, going 80 yards on 12 plays, culminating in a 17-yard scamper by Noah Duncan with 3:51 left in the contest. The 2-point conversion gave the Indians their final spread of 24-0.The Indians offense racked up 252 total yards, holding Cherokee to just 66 for the game.
Oneida’s Dannon West was named Offensive MVP of the game, while Cole West was named Defensive MVP. After leading his team to a perfect 11-0 record, Oneida coach Heath Sexton was named the East District Coach of the Year. Named All-District in Class AA were Adam Young, Noah Duncan, Dannon West, Brandon Smith, Trevor Allen, and Houston West of Oneida. After the Class A championship game earlier in the day, sixteen County players were named to their respective All-District team. From Fairview, Matt Smithers, Ronnie Caldwell, Dalton Day, and Wendell Newport were honored. From Huntsville, Wyatt Wunderlin, Logan Pike, John Carson and Duncan Phillips were named. Burchfield saw Justin King, Jordan Potter, Jacob Phillips and Jordin Smith named, and Robbins had Hunter Henry, Jordin Henry, Jordin Phillips and Austin Sexton added to the All-District roster.
