Candidate Field Set For Town of Winfield Election

Huntsville, TN (2010-08-19) With the qualifying deadline past, the field of the candidates for the Town of Winfield municipal election has been set.

According to Administrator of Elections Gabe Lowe, two persons have qualified to run Mayor of Winfield in November, along with a field of five candidates seeking two seats on the city council.

Current Alderman and Vice-Mayor Virgil David Cecil and former Winfield Mayor Bob Strunk will square off in the November election, both seeking the Town’s highest elected seat.  Current Mayor Kenneth L. (Kenny) Burchfield has chosen not to run for office in November.

Likewise, current aldermen Verscle (Bert) Burchfield and John D. Sexton will not seek re-election.  Those vying for one of the two open seats include:  Chad Jones, who was defeated by Sexton four years ago by a single vote, along with former Alderman Joe Stephens, former Winfield Street Department foreman Bill S. Anderson and two other political newbies, Jeffery B. King and Kelvin King.

If elected, Cecil, who has two years remaining on his current term on the city council, would have to be replaced; an appointment that would be made by the Mayor and the other three members of the Board of Aldermen.

Deadline for withdrawing from the candidate field is Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 12:00 p.m.
