Liquor By The Drink On November Ballot; Constable Vacancy To Be Filled By Voters

Huntsville, TN (2010-08-30) A liquor by the drink referendum inside the corporate limits of the Town of Huntsville will likely appear on the November General Election ballot.  Voters will also have the chance to elect a new constable in the 1st District, as current Constable David (Blue) Day will have to resign his post to accept his new position on the Scott County Commission.

According to Administrator of Elections Gabe Lowe, a liquor by the drink referendum will likely appear on the November ballot.  In November 2006, the last time the liquor question was on the ballot, the issue failed by just 16 votes, 219 to 203.  Two years earlier, the question was narrowly subjugated in Huntsville, 260 to 239.  While the issue nearly passed in Huntsville in 2004, voters in Oneida weren’t as interested in allowing the legal sale of liquor, voting the issue down 812 to 510.  Official notification of the liquor by the drink referendum question will be made 30-days prior to the November 2, 2010 election.

In other election news, first district Constable David (Blue) Day, who was elected to the Scott County Board of County Commissioners in August, will have to resign his post to accept his new job.  While Day’s resignation cannot be officially accepted by the Commission until its meeting on September 20, 2010, the Scott County Election Commission, in anticipation of his resignation, has made official notification the job will appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot.  To qualify for the job, candidates must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age; be a qualified voter of the district; be able to read and write; not have been convicted in any federal or state court of a felony; and not have been separated or discharged from the armed forces of the United States with other than an honorable discharge. Interested persons must file with the Scott County Election Commission a nominating petition and an affidavit signed by the candidate affirming that he or she meets the qualifications.  Deadline for returning qualifying petitions will be Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 12:00 noon.

In the Town of Winfield election, one person has opted out of the race for Alderman.  Former Street Department Foreman Bill Anderson has withdrawn from the race, leaving four persons vying for the two opens seats on the Board.  Qualified candidates include:  Chad Jones, Jeff B. King, Kelvin King and Joe Stephens.
