Two Injured In Weather-Related Traffic Crash

Winfield, TN (2011-01-05) A single vehicle traffic accident on Scott Highway near the new Winfield Elementary School sent two people to the hospital on Wednesday.

According to Sgt. Brian Boshears of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Kevin Perkins, 34, of Oneida was traveling northbound on U.S. 27 Wednesday afternoon, when he reportedly lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway and struck an rock embankment on the highway’s edge.

Perkins, along with a front seat passenger in his 2002 Ford Escape, identified as 9-year-old Shane Perkins, were both injured in the accident.  Both were transported from the scene to St. Mary’s Medical Center of Scott County and later released,

In his report, Sgt. Boshears attributed the cause of the accident to rain and snow slickened highways.  He further credited the pairs’ usage of seat belts for minimizing their injuries.

Trooper Boshears was assisted on the scene by the Scott County Sheriff’s Department and members of the Winfield Fire Department.

The accident, which occurred around 4:00 p.m., was one of many accidents worked by local law enforcement officers Wednesday afternoon.  A sudden, unexpected snow squall caught several motorists by surprise, resulting in both county and municipal officers working numerous accidents through the evening.
