Oneida Woman Writes Bad Checks For Pair Of Vehicles

Oneida, TN (2011-04-15) An Oneida woman is accused of writing a pair of worthless checks to purchase two vehicles from local used car dealers.

Elizabeth A. Claxton, 23, of Oneida was arrested on Thursday by the Oneida Police Department following an investigation into an allegation she wrote a worthless check to purchase a vehicle from a local auto body shop.  According to an arrest warrant filed by Chief Darryl Laxton, Claxton allegedly wrote a $13,984.65 check to Custom Greg’s Auto Body Shop to purchase a vehicle.  After tendering the check to the bank, the owner reportedly discovered the check was worthless and had been written on the account of a third party without authorization.

After being contacted the body shop owner, Claxton reportedly returned the vehicle; however, the owner claimed the vehicle had sustained about $450 in damage while in her possession.

Upon further investigation, authorities learned it wasn’t the first time Claxton had committed the same offense.  In January, Claxton allegedly wrote another check of more than $12,000 to North Star Auto Sales to purchase another vehicle.  Likewise, the check was reportedly worthless.  Claxton reportedly returned the car after the owner of the business made multiple requests of her over a two to three week period of time.

Claxton was charged with passing a worthless check over $10,000 (two counts), vandalism of less than $500, and joyriding.
