Special Census Could Mean Additional Revenue For Winfield

Winfield, TN (2011-06-14) A special census conducted by the Town of Winfield last month found nearly 80 additional residents that were not accounted for in the 2010 U.S. Census.  The discovery of the new citizens could result in several thousand dollars in additional revenue for the struggling municipality.

According to Mayor V. David Cecil, the special census conducted by the Town of Winfield in May counted an additional 78 persons residing inside the corporate limits of the small municipality.  While the number may seem insignificant, each of those residents will result in an estimated increase of $1,000 in state shared revenues per person, meaning the financial struggling tiny town could see an additional $78,000 in state funds.

While optimistic, town officials noted the special census numbers must be approved by the State.

According to the official 2010 U.S. Census, Winfield had a population of 967 residents on April 1, 2010, which reflected a 6.1% increase over the last decade.  Upon learning the census numbers, town officials immediately felt the count was inaccurate.  If approved, the official population of the Town, which would be used as a base line for all filings requiring population data, would be 1054.
