OPD:  Training For The Future

Oneida, TN (2011-09-15) On the heels of a successful drug roundup two weeks ago, the Oneida Police Department continues to focus on illicit drugs, as two Oneida Police officers will soon receive further training in drug interdiction and covert drug operations.

According to Oneida Police Chief Daryl Laxton, Oneida Drug Agent Blake Murphy, along with Patrolman Adam Douglas, will soon attend training specifically designed to get the officers more acquainted with the latest tactics used in the war against illegal drugs.

Laxton, who addressed the Oneida City Council Thursday night, spoke about the department’s recent efforts to curtain the flow of illegal narcotics in and around the city.  On Labor Day, the Oneida Police Department, along with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, attempted to serve more than 40 arrest warrants on suspected dealing dealers in Scott County.  In Oneida alone, more than 20 people were targeted.  “We’ve arrested 19 and still have two at large,” commented Laxton.

“You wouldn’t expect that many (in Scott County),” remarked Oneida Mayor Jack E. Lay, who expressed dismay over the number of people allegedly involved in drug trafficking.  On the positive side, he added, “We now know who they are.”

According to Laxton, several of those arrested have already been processed through the court system.  Two of those arrested, stated Laxton, are expected to accept plea deals that could result in up to eight years of jail time.

Meanwhile, Agent Murphy and Officer Douglas will hone their skills to work on the front lines of the local war on drugs and continue to make cases against suspected drug pushers.

In other business Thursday night, Assistant Chief Daniel Murley of the Oneida Fire Department gave the councilmen a briefing regarding the department’s monthly activities, including training and emergency calls.

The Board also approved a road block for the Oneida baseball and softball teams.  The fund raiser will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2011 at the intersection of Alberta Street and Litton Road.
